Questions, answered
How old do I have to be?
Children join the parent-and-child class from age 4, with an adult on the mat. At 7 they can move up to the kids' class, and there is no upper age for adults.
Can I watch a class?
Yes. There is a bench along the wall for parents. In kids' classes you are welcome to watch, and we ask for quiet during belt tests.
What do I wear to my first class?
A plain t-shirt and loose pants. Shoes stay off the mat, jewelry comes off and long hair is tied back. A uniform and belt come when you join.
What is a class like?
We bow in, warm up, learn one skill, practice it with a partner and bow out. The instructor stays beside new students, and you can sit out any drill.
Can adults and children train together?
Yes. The parent-and-child class is for ages 4 to 7 with an adult on the mat, and the Saturday family class is for all ages. Other classes are by age.
Do I need to be fit or flexible?
No. Warm-ups start gently and everyone works at their own pace. The weekday morning class is a good place to begin if you are over 40.
How do belts work?
Every student starts at white and moves up at a belt test when the instructor sees the skills. See the belts page for what each one covers.
How does tuition work?
It depends on who is training and how often. Each plan lists what it covers, its term and how to cancel; the figures are on our enrollment page and at your first class.
What is the term, and how do I cancel?
Adults start with six months, then go month to month, and children's plans are month to month. To end a plan, tell us in writing with 30 days' notice. Ask us about pausing for travel or illness.
What if I miss a class?
Come to another class at your level the same month. Parent-and-child pairs can swap into any other parent-and-child class with room.
